"Yu Sheng" (魚生) is a famous food among Chinese community. People like to have this dish during the seventh day of the Chinese Lunar calendar. "Yu Sheng" (魚生) basically is a colourful salad with raw fish, seven types of colourful vegetable, crackers and peanut, topped with a honey and plum sauce.

To prepare this dish in traditional way is rather simple. It just takes 7 types vegetable or melon with different colours, fresh fish slices, oil and some seasoning. Once that is ready, everybody will use chopsticks to mix all of them together and yells (greeting) loudly and lively. The sound is loud and the place is filled with spring festival atmosphere.

This has become the local Chinese people's unique tradition custom on the seventh day of Chinese New Year celebration. Chinese restaurants promote various kind of "Yu Sheng" (魚生) to attract customers. They come out with “Yu Sheng” with name that propitious good sign. Although there are always fish slices in the dish, some restaurant actually serve vegetarian "Yu Sheng" (魚生) too.

Although originally people will have it during the seventh day of the celebration, the dish is served all days of Chinese New Year celebration. Some Chinese restaurants start promoting the dish one month before Chinese New Year.

With the innovative of modern Chinese restaurants, the dish is more variety and delicious. They use vegetable and melon with brighter colour, like red and white radish, shredded ginger, onion, hot pepper, garlic, cucumber, jellyfish, winter melon, brocade vegetable, peanut, sesame seed and so on, to serve with several kind of ingredients. "Yu Sheng" (魚生) becomes more colourful and delicious.

There are difference explanations on the origin of "Yu Sheng" (魚生). The dish is categorized under Guangdong dish. Eating fresh fish is not Guangdong dining culture during Chinese New Year celebration. On the other hand, it is believed that "Yu Sheng" (魚生) actually originated from "seven vegetable soup". In the ancient day, Chinese use seven types of vegetable to cook soup to celebrate the seventh day of spring festival. It marks the end of spring celebration and everybody should start working hard after the celebration.

The various ingredients have associated auspicious sayings. For example, the celery means "industrious"; people who eat garlic will know calculation well; fish mean the family has more food left over, etc.

Generally the dish consists of the following ingredients:
1. A bowl of cooking oil (万事如意 May all your wish come true)
2. A bowl of plum sauce (金玉滿堂 May your home be filled with gold and jade)
3. Five spices powder (鴻運當頭 Good luck to you)
4. Lime juice (大吉大利 Best of luck & prosperity)
5. Salmon fish (年年有餘 May you receive good tidings in abundance year after year)
6. Shredded turnip & carrot (風生水起 May your fortune rise)
7. Golden brown flour chips (遍地黃金 May the ground be covered with gold)
