When visiting relatives, it’s customary for them to offer guests tea, along with a round or octagonal tray filled with a dazzling array of treats, from nuts to sweets. This is another edible decoration and known as Chyuhn Haap; the Tray of Togetherness or Chinese candy box. This Chinese candy box is a traditional box used during Chinese New Year for storing candy and other edible goods. Beside use during Chinese New Year, though some regional Chinese cultures may use it for specific events such as Chinese marriages.
Traditionally, after consuming several pieces of the sweets from the tray, red envelopes (known as “Lai See” in Chinese) are placed in the middle of the tray as a token of good fortune. Nowadays, these octagonal trays are present but less seen is the “Lai See” in the center of the trays.
